"Mournful Congregation evokes images of the micro and the macrocosm within nature, simultaneously the crystallized frost on a winter oak leaf and the oceans of celestial light around us. It’s a challenge to create an image for a band that has inspired me so deeply. It has to be timeless and iconic, such a nebulous attainment for an illustrator! Here is my attempt.

My sketches began with the idea of the Archangel Michael. The angel’s traditional symbolism involves such polarities as “good vs evil” or “christ vs satan”, as he slays the serpent in almost every depiction. Since I cannot get behind such extremes, I chose to include the serpent in a more harmonious pose, at one with the decaying angel. The scales of judgement tip, a golden teardrop falls, and the Valley of Dry Bones lies below, as inspired by the story of Ezekiel.

The sigil carved on the foreground skull is that of “The Book of Kings”, Mournful Congregation’s most recent album." -DVD
